To:

Dear Parents and Scouts,

This is a reminder that our first meeting of the new Scout year will be held this Saturday 4 September at 2:00 p.m. at St. Thomas.

As a pot luck we are asking that you bring something to share.  For beverages, please consider water, ice tea, lemonade or juice.  Pleae no sodas.

Also, we try to avoid fried food, pork products, and limit process foods as an effort to move towards healthier eating habits for our entire Scout family.

If you have a grill and can bring that would be helpful.  We will have charcoal and lighter fluid please feel to bring your own.

Ice is always helpful.

Uniform for the day is Class "B" Scout T-shirt and Scout shorts, or blue jeans.

I look forward to seeing all of you back.  As a reminder this event is limited to our returning Scouts and immediate Scout family.  Our Open House will be held on Saturday 18 September at 2:00 p.m.  On that date we would like for you to invite all your friends and family and potential new Scouters.

Thank you,

Yours in Scouting,

Fwd: Welcome Back

To:

Dear Scouts and Parents,

Here is hoping that your summer has been restful and enjoyable.  It's hard to believe but the time has come for us to start another Scout year.  The hope is that all our Scouts from last year return.  We did have some departures, however of a different kind.  Normally we have Scouts leave who graduate and go off to college or age out of the program meaning they turn 18.  Although when a Scout turns 18 he does not have to leave the program he can become an adult our, we know that the last graduating Scouts all went to college.

However this year, Mr. Howard Chapman our Asst. Scoutmaster has moved to North Carolina, one of our Webelo Scouts Sage Blackwood and his mother have also relocated to North Carolina although not in the same area.  With no graduating Scouts this year this means we can expect hopefully the majority of all our Scouts returning.

Our first official meeting is Saturday 4 September.  As I know this is the holiday weekend, last year we conducted a pot luck bar-b-que with great success.  We would like to try it again.  This meeting will begin at 2:00 p.m. and all Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts and parents are invited to attend.  Uniform for the day will be Class "B" with Scout T-shirt and scout shorts or jeans.

As we could use a committee to help organize this event, I will be at the Church is Saturday morning 21 August from 9:00 a.m. to noon for a planning meeting.  Any parent who would like to take part in planning the upcoming year is invited to attend, to include parents who would like to help organize our pot luck meeting for 4 September.

Also, on Friday 20 August at 7:00 p.m.  Mr. Walt Livingston, our Treasurer will meet with members of our Popcorn Committee. If you would like to be a part come out on Friday evening.  Mr. Livingston will be our Popcorn Chairperson or Popcorn Kernel this year.  Our goal is $15,000.00.  This is only $3K more than what we did last year to include the fact that this year's sale will be five instead of four weeks.

Our plan is to do more targeted and focus selling.  Our planning this year is to increase participation of 55% of our families to 80% or better.  That alone will account for the $3K difference by doing exactly what we did last year.  However, with more precise planning we hope to reduce the burden on our best sellers by involving more parents to include making sure we limit the impact on programming so our Scouts have more time for Scouting activities..

Please respond if you have any changes in address or e-mail address.  This is looking up to be a fantastic year and I am looking forward to seeing all of you come back.

Yours in Scouting,

City expands recycling list

Philadelphia's residential recycling program expanded this week to include plastic containers with any number in the little recycling triangle on the bottom.

Previously, the city picked up plastics only with the numerals 1 (such as soda bottles) and 2 (milk jugs, shampoo).

Examples of items in the new categories are:

3: Rigid plastic containers and juice bottles.

4: Plastic tubs and lids from butter, margarine, or similar products.

5: Yogurt containers and deli trays.

6: Plastic cups, plates, and takeout containers.

7: Many mixed plastic containers and some plastic products.

The numbering system only goes through 7. (The city will not recycle plastic bags, PVC, or styrofoam.) As in the past, all items can be placed in one recycling bin, in which is known as "single stream."

For more details about the program, including rewards for participating, go to www.phillyrecyclingpays.com or call 215-685-7329.

Council Wins Verdict In Trial With City

As you've probably heard, a jury of eight citizens found in favor of the Cradle of Liberty Council in their Federal civil suit with the City of Philadelphia over the City's attempt to evict us from the office we built eighty years ago at 22nd & Winter Street.

At issue was whether the City was violating our First Amendment rights by requiring the Council to repudiate the National BSA leadership policy. The jury found that the City's actions were unconstitutional.

The trial was not about the Boy Scout's right to determine its own standards of leadership. The Supreme Court decided ten years ago that the Boy Scouts of America was a private organization and had the right to set its own membership standards. The trial was focused on whether a local government was overstepping its boundaries in attempting to persuade a private organization to change its policy.

One of the positive outcomes of the trial was testimony concerning the positive contributions that Scouting makes in our community. Testimony revealed that the Cradle of Liberty Council serves a wide variety of youth from all walks of life, and these youth are taught to be respectful, courteous, fair and friendly toward all.

In regards to human sexuality, the trial confirmed that the BSA does not have a program that deals with sexuality. If Scouts have questions about this topic, our Scout leaders are taught to answer them honestly and refer them to their parents, religious leaders, medical professionals or others who are qualified to answer these questions. This same testimony revealed that Scouting does not ask people what their orientation is, and we expect people to keep their private life private.

Our hope is that now that this trial is behind us, we can reach a long-term settlement with the City of Philadelphia to put these issues to rest and get back to helping the youth of our area.. We know that the City of Philadelphia is concerned about youth in the City. We share the same concern. Young people need support, help and guidance from caring adults, and we in the Cradle of Liberty Council are committed to providing this support for the youth in our City in the future, just as we have for the past 100 years.

Youth Sought To Contribute To 100th Anniversary Magazine

Scouts and Scouters,

I am pleased to share with you that we are in the process of building a 100th Anniversary Cradle of Liberty Council Magazine to be distributed to our leaders and friends during the fall of 2010. Numerous local organizations have agreed to assist in the underwriting of this project by purchasing advertisement space. David Lipson, President of Philadelphia Magazine has agreed to construct the magazine and has assigned a member of his staff to work with us. Don Ross, Cradle of Liberty Council Historian has been working diligently on building the main article for the magazine that will provide a historical time line of Scouting in Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley. Data and information for additional articles are also being researched and gathered.

With that said, we believe, actually we know our council contains thousands of talented Scouts in numerous fields and activities. We were hoping we could recruit some Scouts who have or are developing talents in the area of journalism to be the actual writers of approximately 7 different articles for this magazine. The magazine's layout will be similar to a Philadelphia Magazine.

A meeting of this committee will be held on Tuesday, July 13th, 7:00 PM at our 22nd and Winter Street Scout Resource Center in Philadelphia and we would like to invite potential writers and photographers to be a part of the construction on this one time anniversary publication.

If you know or are a Scout that is interested in being a part of this project, please contact me at ctomlin@colbsa.org or 610 688 6991.

Yours in Scouting,

Chris Tomlin

BeAScout.org Has A New Face!

BeAScout.org, a tool developed by some of our local councils (including the Cradle of Liberty), has been adopted as the National Online Recruiting Tool by the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America! Over the next few months, Scout Units across this nation will begin using this tool to speak directly to the parents and guardians of future Scouts.

We would like to thank you for your use of beAscout.org since it was released and your constant feedback as to how we could improve this tool.  We have passed on many of your comments to the National Council and are proud to announce that this newly released tool adds some highly desired features to this already powerful recruiting tool.

We invite you to explore this new release of the beAscout.org tool by first reading our "Resource Guide."  There are some steps that you will need to go through before you are able to access your leads.  If you experience any problems with this new tool, please contact your District Executive for additional assistance.

FW: Popcorn Sale Training

-----Original Message-----

Subject: Popcorn Sale Training

Dear Parents and Scouts,

For Scout year 2010-11 we will again participate in the annual Popcorn Sale.  The sale has become very important to our Scouting program because it is our primary fundraiser that financially keeps our program going.  The proceeds from the Popcorn sale can support all our activities and significantly reduce the out of pocket expenses for all Scouts.

The potential of the sale is unlimited and could eliminate the cost or substantially reduce the amount of money spent for uniforms, trips, and camp.   The average operating cost to support one Scout is approximately $350.00 not including summer camp which averages around $375.00.  This means we need on average to raised more than $500.00 per Scout and we are approaching more than 50 Scouts in the program.

Do the math and it's a huge number.  However, if you do the math selling Popcorn, we can reach this number with determination and a little effort from every parent and Scout.  You can start by attending Popcorn Sale training.  This training will take place on 27 July.  If you can attend please do so.  The more parents we have that understand the program and know how it works the better it will be.

Additionally, I will need to rely on a Popcorn Sale Committee and a chairperson to run this sale so that I can focus on program activities.  Mr. Maurice Simmons will be serving as the District's Popcorn Kernel or the Chairperson for the entire district.  Mr. Livingston our Treasurer will be be very involved handling the funds, but we need a committee and a chairperson to organize the sale.

I can help you and give you direction, but I need the Committee to organize our show and sell events, collect money to turn in to Mr. Livingston, maintain an accounting of product to include handling distribution, and reach out to parents to get them involved.  It may seem like a lot but if we have a good group who is willing to pitch in it will not be difficult.

With the number of Scouts we have and with parents participating means that 2 hours twice a month during October will suffice to give us enough Scouts and parents to participate in show and sell events or what we do at the Acme.  In addition to Acme we did not spend a lot of time at the Bala Cynwyd Post Office which has been a good spot for us and we could use some new locations.

Just remember we make approximately $350.00 per hour and the more hours we can get in the bigger our profits.   Also our organization can be better.  For example there were times when we actually had too many Scouts on site.  Fewer Scouts can actually work better by having Site Supervisors (parents) work with Scouts on improving their selling skills while freeing up other Scouts.  Although it will be impossible to avoid our meeting times, the plan will be to reduce the number of Scouts selling during regular meetings so they are not missing program activities.

If you would like to be part of the Popcorn Sale Committee please let me know and especially if you would like to be the Chairperson.  If you ever wanted to run your own business or know what it is like to run a business be part of the committee.  This is no hype, the Popcorn Sale is nothing more than an actual business operation in place.  Every principle that McDonalds or GM or any other business will use to have a successful business year are the very same principles that we will have to use.

We have to do market research to determine how best to reach our customers.  We need to plan on hours we will be open for business.  We have to come up with a marketing plan to attract customers or educate them about our product.  We must train our sales force.  We have to have product on hand in the right quantities and on time.  We must keep our finances straight.  We operate on commissions and if we lose money, that will not reduce the bills we have to pay.  One great part of the process is that we can take as much product as we can but if we don't sell it we have to take it back.  What we don't take it back we pay for it, so inventory control will be important.

Unfortunately so much goes on during the sale that we don't take the time to teach our kids about what is going on.  For the Boy Scouts there are several merit badges they can earn by participating in the sale that include the Salesmanship, Entrepreneur, and  American Business.  It is important for our sons to understand business.  When I was growing up the mantra was to get a good education and get a job.  The labor market has changed significantly and getting a good education and a job is not enough.  With layoffs and downsizing, having a job is no security anymore.

For those that have the spirit and the gumption to start your own business and be your own boss this may be the way to go.  Having a job with an employer used to be the safe bet, but not in today's economy.  Not all of our sons can grow up to be business owners, but we need to instill the idea that they do not have to work for somebody else, but somebody else can work for them.

The Popcorn Sale is more than just a fundraiser that takes up our time in the fall.  It's an opportunity for us to increase the economic literacy of our Scouts.  These can some of the teachable moments that can make a difference and we need to take advantage of them when we can.

Thank you,

Yours in Scouting,
