Parents,

Our Weblos (5th) and Boy Scouts (6th & 7th) are positioned to take advantage of this STEM related program, MathTech, that Obama Administration supports and provides funding to bring educational and economic change to many families.

What is a STEM?

S.T.E.M. is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, and a STEM School focuses on these subjects to help our nation's youth gain the skills required to succeed in today's challenging world. This includes the ability to think critically, solve complex problems, and drive advancements in science and technology.

While the future stability of our economy is unknown and we currently face an economic downturn, parents will take comfort in knowing that science and engineering jobs are growing 70 percent faster than other occupations. This means STEM School students will be at an advantage when competing for the high-tech, high-wage jobs of the future.

This program was fueled by America's high demand for educated individuals to fill the job openings requiring highly skilled STEM workers in order to keep some of the nation's most innovative companies right here in the U.S.

STEM Schools are now emerging across the nation, state by state, to keep America ranked as one of the leading nations in technological breakthroughs and scientific research. However, just like all important programs, funding can often be scarce or inadequate. As of right now, private investors and state programs are scraping together enough money to advance the STEM School program because they understand that investing in our nation's education is one of the most important strategies for maintaining a strong, stable economy in the future.

FORWARDED FROM THE DESK OF COUNCILWOMAN MARIAN TASCO . . .

The Philadelphia City Scholarship Program awards 50 college scholarships to high school seniors each year. Scholarship awards are $1,000 for each academic year for four consecutive years of full-time enrollment in accredited, four-year, bachelor degree programs. The city of Philadelphia funds this scholarship program and has assisted more than 2,500 student sin earning a college degree.

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, you must:
  • be in your final year of high school
  • live in Philadelphia, PA (parent / legal guardian and student must live in Philadelphia)
  • have a minimum grade point average of 3.0
  • have taken the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT)
  • have filed the 2011-2012 FAFSA form (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)
  • plan to apply to at least one accredited, 4-year college in Philadelphia, Bucks, Chester, Delaware or Montgomery counties in Pennsylvania (list of eligible schools on page 2)
  • intend to obtain a bachelor's degree as a full-time student

City Council makes appropriations for these scholarships on an annual basis, so renewal of awards is based on available funds. Scholarship funds are sent directly to the college to be applied to the student's account. Scholarship recipients are required to renew their awards each summer to confirm that they continue to meet the minimum requirements of the program.

Applications for the Philadelphia Scholarship Program are evaluated by the Philadelphia City Scholarship Review Committee. Factors considered include high school grades, extra-curricular activities, leadership potential, writing ability, SAT scores, and financial need (from FAFSA Student Aid Report). Students who receive the Mayor's Scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania are not eligible to receive the Philadelphia City Scholarship.

Dear Cub Parents,

As a reminder we have a major fundraiser that will take place on Saturday morning 5 February 2011.  This will be our first annual Cub Scout Breakfast.  The proceeds of this event will go directly to the Pack 133 budget to be used as Mr. Wilson and the Cub Leadership see fit.

Your participation is critical to making this event a success.  We are asking that all Cubs and parents sell a minimum of three (3) tickets.  The cost is $10.00 per ticket. Kids 10 and younger eat free.

This event will be held at the Overbrook Presbyterian Church located up the street.  Starting at 10:00 a.m.  Our goal is to sell just 150 tickets to achieve a profit of over $1,000.00.  If you have sold tickets already please bring your money to Cub meeting this Saturday and give it to Mr. Livingston our Treasurer.

If you have questions, please call Mr. Joel Wilson at 215-878-6701.

Dear Scouts and Parents,

On Saturday evening 22 January, my son Jason carried out his Eagle Scout Service Project where we invited residents from St. John’s Hospice, the homeless shelter located at 12th and Race Streets.  Mr. George Otey, of the Men’s Fellowship cooked the meal and other members of the Men’s Fellowship came to help out.  Father Bonney, Assistant Rector of St. Thomas delivered the opening prayer and blessed the food.  Parents brought deserts or beverages.

We were told that between 6 to 10 residents had signed up and we told them we were prepared to host 15 to 20 guests.  Unfortunately only two showed up when we went to pick them up.  Despite that, it was a great evening.  Our Boy Scouts were on hand and helped set up.  They performed an excellent opening ceremony.  The donations of clothing and other items for our Gift of the Magi Service Project are designated for St. John’s so we allowed the two guests to go through what we had collected.

They were delighted at the multitude of clothing that was available.  Additionally, at the end we provided them gift bags that we put together of some toiletries, a winter scarf, and some other items.  They were very grateful for the meal and the evening.

One of the highlights of the night was the showing of a video that the Boy Scouts put together.  It was a presentation of pictures of our various camping trips and activities along with video commentary by Scouts on why they enjoy Scouting.  It was both heartwarming and inspiring and I could not have been more proud of them.  Jason was disappointed that more residents from St. John’s did not show.  I told him not to worry about it.  I told him he did a great job and all of the support that everyone contributed made the evening a total success.

As Scoutmaster I want to thank everyone for making the evening a success and especially our Boy Scouts for proving that they do live up to the Scout Oath, especially the part that says “…to help other people at all time.”

Yours in Scouting,

Dear Scout Family,

Mr. Steve Buck, member of our Cub Committee is a professional caterer. He is offering us a fundraiser opportunity to help raise funds for both the Scout and Cub programs. On Saturday morning 5 February we will hold our First Annual Scout Breakfast and our First Annual Cub Breakfast.

This event will be held at the Overbrook Presbyterian Church located at the corner of City Line and Lancaster Avenue a block up from St. Thomas. We are holding it at Overbrook due to their more specious hall and available parking.

Mr. Buck is donating all of the food and bearing the cost of food preparers and servers. Our job will be to promote and sell tickets. The breakfast will be broken into two segments.

The Scout Breakfast will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 9:45.

The Cub Scout Breakfast will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
The ticket price will be $10.00 per person. Kids 10 and younger eat free. Our goal is to have each Scout parent sell between three and five tickets. Flyers and tickets will be available. Fwd: Happy New Year Parents & Leaders

Dear Parents & Leaders,

Happy New Year and I apologize for my long absence.  Unfortunately I was battling with the flu or bronchitis at the beginning of the year.  In an unusual move for me, I was in bed and in fact missed a couple of days of work.  I am on the mend.  I hope you had a very enjoyable holiday season and ready to go to work.  We have a lot ahead of us.

Hopefully all of you will be able to make it to meeting this Saturday.  As far as I know we will have a regular meeting schedule.  Here is what we have going on.

Gifts of the Magi

This is our annual service project where we collect men?s clothing and toiletries for the residents of St. John?s Hospice.  St. John?s is located at 12th and Race Streets.  It is a homeless shelter and we collect just about anything that men can use.  We have a box in the Undercroft and we will be collecting through the month of January.

St. John?s Service Project

My son Jason is working on his Eagle Scout service project.  He has elected to organize a meal for some of the residents of St. John?s.  We have done this in the past we have invited 12 to 15 residents and prepared a meal for them at St. Thomas.  We go to St. John?s and pick them up and bring them to St. Thomas. We eat with them and have a program for them.  Mr. George Otey a member of the Men?s Fellowship of St. Thomas will do the cooking and he will have help with other men from the Fellowship.  The Boy Scouts will help Jason in serving the meal and will take part in a program that they will put together.  This event will take place Saturday night 22 January starting at about 6:00 p.m.  Any adult leader or parent are welcome to come out and help if they wish.

First Scout Breakfast/ First Cub Breakfast

Mr. Steve Buck, Committee Member is a professional caterer.  He is donating his services to hold a breakfast fundraiser on Saturday 5 February.  For space and availability the breakfast will be held at Overbrook Presbyterian Church which is up the street from St. Thomas.  Because of limited seating there will be two meals that morning.  The first seating is at 8:30 a.m. and will go until 9:45 a.m.  We are calling this our first annual Scout Breakfast.  The second seating will start at 10:00 a.m. and will be called our first annual Cub Breakfast.  Tickets will cost the same $10.00 each with kids 10 and under free.  I will send out a flyer later this week.  Tickets can be picked up on Saturday.  We are asking each Scout to sell at least 5 tickets.  All proceeds from the Scout breakfast will go toward the Boy Scout program and all proceeds from the Cub Breakfast will go toward the Cub Scout program.  The goal is to target all of the Scout units within the Triune District.  There will be room in the hall to set up displays.  Since this will be during the month of February, this will be a good time to promote Scouting.  Boy Scout leaders will be asked to help out during the Scout breakfast and Cub leaders during the Cub Breakfast.  The Boy Scouts will be on hand during the entire morning to help out.

Pinewood Derby

Triune Pinewood Derby will be Saturday March 12 and it will be at Berean Institute.  Prior to that we have conducted our own Pinewood Derby.  I will wait for Mr. Wilson and the other Cub leaders to tell me what date will hold our own.  Prior to that we will have workshops that all Cubs can work on their kits.

Blue and Gold Banquet/ Court of Honor

This year we will hold a separate banquet.  I am proposing the date of Saturday 19 February.  The time will be 2:00 p.m.  We will ask Mr. Steve Buck if he is able to cater this event providing he is available.  The Blue and Gold banquet is a Cub Scout event where Cubs can receive awards and recognition they have earned up to that event.  The next opportunity to recognize Cubs and their achievement will be the year end meeting.

The Court of Honor is the Boy Scout?s award banquet and I am proposing the same date of Saturday 19 February.  The time will be 5:30 p.m.  This event will recognize the awards and achievements of Boy Scouts. In the past we had the two banquets together.  However, since the Cub program has grown the time has come for separate banquets.

Please let me know if these dates are acceptable.  In the past these events would be held at the last Saturday, however I will be forced to be out of town and because of use of the facility in the afternoon and evening it will be important for me to be there.  This will avoid having to pay for security to have someone there if I am absent.

19 March ? Alternate Meeting Plans

On Saturday 19 March there will be an event at St. Thomas where we will not have access to our meeting areas.  This will be a good day to plan for an outside activity or trip.  Please plan on activities that are away from St. Thomas on that day.

Roundtable Monday 17 January

All leaders need to be advise that that Triune District Roundtable is conducted the third Monday of every month at the Marks Building Scout Headquarters at 22nd and Winters Street at 7:00 p.m.  This monthly meeting is attended by the District Chairperson, now Mr. Charles West, volunteer, District Commissioner, Ms. Christine Shaw, volunteer, and Mr. Anthony ?AW? Weiss, District Executive, paid professional.  All unit leaders are invited to attend to discuss activities that occur in the district and the council.  All leaders are encourage to come at least every other month to find out what is going on and to meet your fellow leaders within the district.

Summer Camp

This month we need to confirm our summer camp plans for both Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts.  As mentioned previously the Boy Scouts will be planning to attend summer camp at the Flaming Arrow Scout Reservation near Tampa Florida.  Graduating Webelos will be eligible to attend Boy Scout summer camp, but there will be an option for new Scouts and graduating Webelos to attend summer camp at Resica Falls with Troop One.  Summer camp information needs to be provided to parents so that cost estimates can be made and camp deposits can be collected.

Medical Forms

There are two medical forms that have been handed out.  The two page Annual Medical Form needs to be completed by all Scouts and leaders who plan to attend summer camp.  This form will need the signature of a physician.  There is a single form that all Scouts and leaders should complete that provide basic health information.  This form does not require a physician?s signature.  The single page form needs to be turned in as soon as possible.

Recharter

I am happy to report that I was able to complete the rechartering process on time.  Rechartering is the process where all leaders, parent leaders, and Scouts have to be reported on our official roster.  There is a Troop roster and a Pack roster.  I will send out copies of our current roster.  The rosters will include names, addresses, and telephone numbers.  You may share this information with parents.  However, caution needs to be used that all rosters can only used for official Scout purposes and cannot be released to anyone outside of the Scouting family.

University City District Seeks Community Support for Residents Displaced by the five-alarm fire Monday night.

A five-alarm fire ripped through West Philadelphia Monday afternoon displacing approximately 98 residents, including families with children, students and seniors. More than 160 firefighters battled the five-alarm blaze that raged through the Windermere Court Apartments at 48th and Walnut streets. Clouds of black smoke could be seen as far as Center City . The fire was declared under control at 7:25pm.

Many residents left the apartment with just the clothing on their backs and University City District is seeking clothing, coats, shoes, personal hygiene items and any other related items for distribution to these residents through the Salvation Army.

Interested donors can bring items or financial donations directly to the Salvation Army at 5501 Market Street (215-474-1010) or drop them off at UCD during the hours of Monday thru Friday, 8:30am to 5pm. Any financial donations should be given directly to the Salvation Army or the Red Cross. Thank you.

Dear Scouter,

The Cradle of Liberty Council is looking for input regarding your feelings toward the Scouting program and its implementation as well as the services provided.  Over the next few months our council will be developing a five year strategic plan that will guide our programs, facilities and service to you and your family.  We plan to seek feed back from several different customer groups moving forward.  The most successful strategic plans gain feed back from as many groups as possible to help shape the path of our future.

Below you will find online survey links designed for specific customers of the Cradle of Liberty Council.  Please take any survey that applies to your role/s in Scouting!  Each survey should take roughly ten minutes.  To date we have over 500 surveys completed!

When you participate in the survey program you will provide our leadership with the information necessary to plot the future path of Cradle of Liberty.

Survey results will be kept confidential and no names are required when submitting your survey.  Please respond by January 10th.

Please help us spread the word!  Forward this email to any family, volunteer or individual involved in Cradle of Liberty Scouting in your address book!

Thanks for your time and all you do for Scouting!
