Dear Scouts and Parents,

While Saturday will be a joyous day when we officially start our near Scout year, it will also be a solemn remembrance of the terrible day in 2001 when many Americans lost their lives in a dreadful attack.  We have been tasked by the BSA to mark this day in some way especially to say thank you to our national heroes that include our police and firemen and men and women in uniform.

Many of our Scouts may be too young to know the events that surrounded that day.  The lesson should be that hate never conquers anything and that love conquers all.  That when we work to love those around us though difficult as it may be, we can make the world a better place.

This coming Saturday we will ask our Cubs to make up cards and posters that say Thank You and take them to our local Fire Station down the street.  Also please let us know if you have a family member or friend who falls into a hero category, either employed by the Fire Department, Police Department or serving in the Armed Forces.  We will make some effort to recognize and acknowledge them.

Yours in Scouting,

Harvard University Announcement

No tuition and no student loans

Harvard University announced over the weekend that from now on undergraduate students from low-income families will pay no tuition. In making the announcement, Harvard's president Lawrence H. Summers said, "When only ten percent of the students in elite higher education come from families in the lower half of the income distribution, we are not doing enough. We are not doing enough in bringing elite higher education to the lower half of the income distribution."

If you know of a family earning less than $60,000 a year with an honor student graduating from high school soon, Harvard University wants to pay the tuition. The prestigious university recently announced that from now on undergraduate students from low-income families can go to Harvard for free... no tuition and no student loans!

To find out more about Harvard offering free tuition for families making less than $60,000 a year, visit Harvard's financial aid website at:
http://www.fao.fas.harvard.edu/ or call the school's financial aid office at (617) 495-1581.

To:

Dear Parents and Scouts,

This is a reminder that our first meeting of the new Scout year will be held this Saturday 4 September at 2:00 p.m. at St. Thomas.

As a pot luck we are asking that you bring something to share.  For beverages, please consider water, ice tea, lemonade or juice.  Pleae no sodas.

Also, we try to avoid fried food, pork products, and limit process foods as an effort to move towards healthier eating habits for our entire Scout family.

If you have a grill and can bring that would be helpful.  We will have charcoal and lighter fluid please feel to bring your own.

Ice is always helpful.

Uniform for the day is Class "B" Scout T-shirt and Scout shorts, or blue jeans.

I look forward to seeing all of you back.  As a reminder this event is limited to our returning Scouts and immediate Scout family.  Our Open House will be held on Saturday 18 September at 2:00 p.m.  On that date we would like for you to invite all your friends and family and potential new Scouters.

Thank you,

Yours in Scouting,

Fwd: Welcome Back

Sent from my HTC on the Now Network from Sprint!

From: brock.man@comcast.net

Subject: Welcome Back
To:

Dear Scouts and Parents,

Here is hoping that your summer has been restful and enjoyable.  It's hard to believe but the time has come for us to start another Scout year.  The hope is that all our Scouts from last year return.  We did have some departures, however of a different kind.  Normally we have Scouts leave who graduate and go off to college or age out of the program meaning they turn 18.  Although when a Scout turns 18 he does not have to leave the program he can become an adult our, we know that the last graduating Scouts all went to college.

However this year, Mr. Howard Chapman our Asst. Scoutmaster has moved to North Carolina, one of our Webelo Scouts Sage Blackwood and his mother have also relocated to North Carolina although not in the same area.  With no graduating Scouts this year this means we can expect hopefully the majority of all our Scouts returning.

Our first official meeting is Saturday 4 September.  As I know this is the holiday weekend, last year we conducted a pot luck bar-b-que with great success.  We would like to try it again.  This meeting will begin at 2:00 p.m. and all Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts and parents are invited to attend.  Uniform for the day will be Class "B" with Scout T-shirt and scout shorts or jeans.

As we could use a committee to help organize this event, I will be at the Church is Saturday morning 21 August from 9:00 a.m. to noon for a planning meeting.  Any parent who would like to take part in planning the upcoming year is invited to attend, to include parents who would like to help organize our pot luck meeting for 4 September.

Also, on Friday 20 August at 7:00 p.m.  Mr. Walt Livingston, our Treasurer will meet with members of our Popcorn Committee. If you would like to be a part come out on Friday evening.  Mr. Livingston will be our Popcorn Chairperson or Popcorn Kernel this year.  Our goal is $15,000.00.  This is only $3K more than what we did last year to include the fact that this year's sale will be five instead of four weeks.

Our plan is to do more targeted and focus selling.  Our planning this year is to increase participation of 55% of our families to 80% or better.  That alone will account for the $3K difference by doing exactly what we did last year.  However, with more precise planning we hope to reduce the burden on our best sellers by involving more parents to include making sure we limit the impact on programming so our Scouts have more time for Scouting activities..

Please respond if you have any changes in address or e-mail address.  This is looking up to be a fantastic year and I am looking forward to seeing all of you come back.

Yours in Scouting,

City expands recycling list

Philadelphia's residential recycling program expanded this week to include plastic containers with any number in the little recycling triangle on the bottom.

Previously, the city picked up plastics only with the numerals 1 (such as soda bottles) and 2 (milk jugs, shampoo).

Examples of items in the new categories are:

3: Rigid plastic containers and juice bottles.

4: Plastic tubs and lids from butter, margarine, or similar products.

5: Yogurt containers and deli trays.

6: Plastic cups, plates, and takeout containers.

7: Many mixed plastic containers and some plastic products.

The numbering system only goes through 7. (The city will not recycle plastic bags, PVC, or styrofoam.) As in the past, all items can be placed in one recycling bin, in which is known as "single stream."

For more details about the program, including rewards for participating, go to www.phillyrecyclingpays.com or call 215-685-7329.
