Congratulations to Cub Scout Pack 358 for Making the News!

Congratulations to Pack 358. Members of our Pack attended Cub World last summer with members from 358. They are a great Cub and their achievements help the Scouting Mission and improve the brand of Scouting locally in Philadelphia.

"Cub Scout Pack 358, representing Northwest Philadelphia, is the first African-American Boy Scouts of America cub scouts pack in the country. They celebrated their 59th Annual “Blue & Gold Banquet” at their founding location at the Grace Baptist Church of Germantown, 25 W. Johnson St. on the border of Mount Airy and Germantown. The event was held on Saturday, Feb. 19 at noon."

However the article's title U.S.’s first Black Cub Scout troop celebrates 59 years and some facts do not seem to be supported by the facts. Incidentally, Troop 133's history is outlined in the exhibits in the Great Hall at the church and our founding goes back to the 1920s. Please be sure to visit on your next trip to the church to see for yourself.

Additionally, we are forming a Historical Committee with our Troop / Pack to work with the St. Thomas Episcopal Church Historical Society to more thoroughly research, archive and bring to light all relevants facts regarding our Scouting's program glorious history.

Dear Scouts and Parents,

This Sunday 27 February will be Scout Sunday.  We are asking all Scouts and parents to be present.  Although the uniform for the day is full Class "A" uniform with neckerchief, if your Scout does not have a uniform it is OK!!!

It is far more important that he be there than have a uniform.  The importance of this day is that it is the one and biggest opportunity to show the strength of the Scouting Program.  The Scout Program is the favorite program of many parishioners at St. Thomas to include ones who have never had a child in the program.

They are impressed with your service work, dedication to youth, positive demonstration of role models for young people, and the good that we do in the community.  This is why it is so important to have as many Scouts as possible there.

I will ask all Scouts to be present by 9:30 a.m.  If you must leave before the service is over that is OK.  If you must attend services at your place of worship and must come late that is OK.  Services are rather long and will not be over until noon.  Scouts will sit in the upper left hand section as you come into the Church.

After service Scouts and parents are asked to come into the Great Hall where the Boy Scouts meet for coffee hour.  We will have displays set up.  Scout Sunday is held in February and is normally the Sunday before 8 February which is the anniversary day of Scouting, but can be celebrated just about any Sunday.

Dear Scouts and Parents,

As a reminder, Sunday 27 February will be Scout Sunday.  This is the one time of year that we ask all Scouts to attend services at St. Thomas.  Parents and other family members are invited as well.

Scouts will need to be at the Church by 9:45 a.m.  Services should be over by 12:10 p.m.

The uniform for the day is Class “A” uniform with neckerchief.  For those Scouts who do have a uniform you are asked to complete a Uniform Inventory.  This is the sheet that is attached to the e-mail.

You should complete this sheet to identify what items you currently do not own and need to have for a full and complete the uniform.  Please indicate your size as well since this is very important.

We will do what we can do to help source uniforms items for you.  If you are notified that uniform items are available, they will be on a first come, first same basis in the thrift shop.

If you would like to purchase a uniform on your own, you may go to 22nd & Winters Streets.  This is Scout Headquarters located next to the old Philadelphia Board of Education.  You will need to go around to the rear of the building through the parking lot to enter the Scout Shop.

Dear Cubs, Scouts, and Parents,

Once again, fabulous job on our first Cub and Scout Breakfast.  Steve Buck is going to give us the statistics, but and he and talked the day and he mentioned that over 1,200 pancakes were eaten, along with 360 eggs, 30 pounds of bacon, which I think translates into 600 strips and the crowd went through 200 paper plates.  This was a tremendous success and all the credit goes to you our parents, Scouts, and leaders.  Special thanks goes out to Mr. Livingston who worked the door the whole time and I don't think got a chance to eat an entire breakfast.

As we move along into the Scout year we have a host of activities going on.  Please take note of the following two Sunday which are going to occur at St. Thomas.

Sunday 20 February - Coffee Hour

The St. Thomas Scout Program will host coffee hour in honor of our Scout Anniversary which occurs in February.  Scouting came to the U.S. on 8 February 1910.  As a practice in the past when hosting coffee hour Scout parents have conducted a bake sale.  This is not required unless there are parents who would like to do so.  If there are parents who want to do so, please coordinate with Mr. Morrow and select a coordinator.  The coordinator will take charge of putting the sale together with other parents.   We will ask for some Scouts to be present and Scout leaders are welcome if they choose to attend/or set up a display of Scouting activity for their Scout group.  Those who would like to help with coffee hour need to arrive at St. Thomas no later than 11:30 a.m. and help clean up at the end.  Everything should be finished by 1:00 p.m. For St. Thomas Scouts who attend services there you may bring your uniform and change at the Church.

Sunday 27 February - Scout Sunday

All Scouts are asked to attend Sunday services in full Class "A" uniform on Sunday 27 February.  Services begin at 10:00 a.m. and will end at 12:00 noon.  Parents are invited to attend.  Scouts who currently do not have a complete uniform are asked to submit a individual uniform inventory sheet to identify what uniform items they need.  We will see what can be done to assist Scouts without a uniform.  The inventory sheets will be available on Saturday.   We would like as many Scouts as possible to attend.  This gathering is the one time of the year when the Scout program can show it's growth and vitality and is a tremendous help in getting support to include financial contributions from the parishioners of St. Thomas.

Here's how things went yesterday;

SCOUTS
Breakfast   -   $710
Registration  -  $112 ( Maqui Herder & Daronn Lipscomb )
Summer Camp - $50
Swimming   -   $121 ( Cost was $534 )
Ttl                   $993 for deposit

CUB SCOUTS
Breakfast   -   $744 ( Cost was $150 )
Ttl                   $594 for deposit

The total for the day was $1,737 less $150 (cub account) for the Sexton.  As a reminder the scouts paid $180 for the church deposit several months ago.

So given the above looks like the scouts brought in
$340 ( previously reported )
  710 ( day of )
 $1,050

Cub scouts brought in
$600 ( previously reported )
  744 ( day of )
$1,344

There are several people that have outstanding tickets.  It's reflected in the attached, however most sold all or some portion of what was issued and handed in unsold tickets.

A ticket for ticket audit would be tough, but I guess for the next go around the best thing is to minimize door sales by increasing pre-sales.  There were a number of single ticket sales that were credited to the scouts or cubs, but no specific parent, so  they don't show in the total on the spreadsheet.  I'll have to go back thru the receipt book and add those amounts to the spreadsheet as a footnote.

If you have any questions, please contact me.

Walt

Dear Scouts and Parents,

It is hard to come up with a single word to describe our success today in our first Annual Scout and Cub Breakfast but it was a magnificent day.  First, I want to thank Mr. Steve Buck our Committee Member for the fantastic job of cooking and making this day a success.  Second I want to thank Mr. Walt Livingston, our Treasurer who kept everything together by issuing tickets, collecting money, and doing the numerous other small things that the rest of us take for granted.

Next I want to thank all of the leaders and parents who pitched in and sold tickets or donated money through purchasing tickets.  I am shocked and amazed at our success.  I knew it was possible, but just this past Thursday as I was sending my final e-mails before leaving town for my father-in-law's funeral, the projections were very light.  The Boy Scouts had confirmed only 30 tickets sold, and the Cub Scouts had a confirmed 60.

The projection looked as thought we would be lucky to have a little more than a hundred.  The final count is not in, but sales went extremely well today.  We will discuss what happened today so that when we do this again it will be better.  However, for right now it couldn't have been better. I especially want to thank our Scouts who worked to make things a success as well.

This was a great display of our outstanding Scout program.  Once again thank you.

To: <wlivingston111@comcast.net>

Dear Parents,

It is absolutely critical that you communicate with Mr. Walt Livingston today on your ticket count for our Scout Breakfast that will take place this Saturday 5 February.  As a reminder the Boy Scout Breakfast will start at 8:30 a.m. and the Cub Scout Breakfast will start at 10:00 a.m.

The location is the Overbrook Presbyterian Church located up the street from St. Thomas at the corner of City Line Avenue and Lancaster Avenue.  Please go directly to Overbrook on Saturday morning.

Please do not project on tickets not sold as we do not want to inflate the numbers and have food go to waste.  Please provide an accurate account of actual sales.

Your ticket count should include tickets sold and money collected to turn in.  All money should be turned in to Mr. Livingston.  He may be reached via the following ways;

Via e-mail at wlivingston111@comcast.net

Via cell phone:  215-801-8094.

If you have already communicated your count, thank you for your cooperation.  Thank you for your help.  Again, I cannot emphasize enough that this is a major fundraiser for us and could be a viable method of raising funds in the future.

As mentioned previously, all of these funds are used to support the Scout program and directly benefit your Scout.  This is money that can reduce the out of pocket expense that you have to spend to have your Scout participate in the program.

The goal is to make this program economically feasible and affordable for all Scouts regardless of the financial circumstances he may have at home.  Every boy deserves an opportunity to participate in Scouting and money should never and I repeat never, should be an obstacle from him to learning to do his best.

Thank you,
