| | | | | | | Dear Scouter, |  What a great weekend for a campout! I hope you took the opportunity to be outdoors. Other than a few raindrops Sunday morning, the weather was spectacular. My troop spent the weekend at Camp Hart fishing and working on our pioneering skills. Unfortunately because of the dry weather over the past several months, the fire danger rating for the region is at Extreme which meant no campfire Saturday evening. That got me to thinking about how we have all come to associate campfires with our Scouting campouts, and how much things have changed over the years. It used to be that unless we had a real bonfire, we did not consider it a campfire. Thankfully today we are making efforts to be better stewards of the land by following the Leave No Trace principles. Item 5 is to "minimize campfire impact". That does not mean that a campfire cannot still be the highlight of a weekend campout or summer camp (unless of course there is a fire ban in effect). It does mean that we all should follow the Leave No Trace campfire guidance of (1) never create new fire pits, (2) never burn wood that is bigger around than your wrist, (3) never cut down trees for firewood, (4) never dispose of trash in fire pits, and (5) never transport wood over long distances (which can spread invasive insects). The DO's of campfires today are (1) collect small, dead, and downed wood from near your campsite, (2) build your fire in an existing fire ring or on a durable surface, and (3) burn the wood to ash. By following these three simple DO's, we can continue to enjoy our campfires while still protecting and preserving our environment. | | | | Pack Planning Workshops | |  Your friendly Quality Unit Executives will once again be hosting Pack Planning Workshops this spring. This year we will be concentrating on working with you to build your 2012-13 pack calendar of events and meetings along with coming up with a budget to support all your desired activities. This is a great opportunity to exchange ideas with fellow Cub leaders about events, activities, and practices that have worked well for their packs. In addition we will be discussing a topic which seems to be of great interest for all packs - Volunteer Recruitment!

With the addition of an eighth troop from Council, we still have openings for Youth for the 2013 National Jamboree. Boy Scouts must be age 12 prior to the start of the Jamboree and not yet 18 by the last day of the Jamboree. | COL Eagle Scout Alumni Association - Now Meeting Every Month |  The COL Eagle Alumni Association has begun meeting on the 4th Monday of each month at the Marks Scouting Resource Center. | Take the SCOUTStrong PALA Challenge!
|  Be prepared to take the challenge:
The Boy Scouts of America have now partnered with the President's Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition to present the new "SCOUTStrong" program. By joining with the Presidents Active Lifestyle Award (PALA), this new program integrates exercise with healthy lifestyle changes in an effort to bring about positive life changes, and an increased awareness of the significance of everyday lifestyle choices in contributing to an overall health and fitness of Scouts and Scouters of all ages. This new program is for everyone associated with the Boy Scouts of America, which includes Scouts, Venturers, Parents, Volunteers, Commissioners, Council Staff, Board Members, Friends of Scouting, and even BSA Alumni. How it works:
To become involved and earn the SCOUTStrong/PALA Challenge Award, each participant is required to meet a daily goal of activity and fitness, for at least five days a week, and for six of eight weeks to start. Faithful fulfillment of your individual goals will result in earning the ScoutStrong award in about two months. Participants track their progress by entering the activities that they complete on a daily basis, and tracking their healthy eating goals on a weekly basis. The tracking is completed on-line through the PALA website, or can be recorded on a paper tracking chart.
No matter what method participants use to record their progress, the results will be the same: Healthier, more physically prepared Scouts and Scouters, who are more ready to meet the challenges of the Scouting program, as well as living healthier, more active lives. How to sign up:

| Raise Your Hand in Support of Scouting |  Dollars for Doers is a program where companies donate money to a charitable organization based on the time donated by volunteers to that organization. In other words, you can help Scouting at no cost to you. Many dedicated Scouters in the Cradle of Liberty Council work for companies that support this program. This program requires no extra time OR money from individual Scouters. It is designed to reward those nonprofits to which a volunteer has ALREADY given his or her time. | Journey to Excellence Service Hours |  It's pretty certain that your unit has participated in some really great service projects this year; most likely more than one! Did you know that service hours are all part of your unit's Journey to Excellence? (which replaced the Unit Program)
