by Lynne Hammond lahammond927@yahoo.com (Webleos II Parent)

On Saturday, March 31, 2012, I attend a Parent Education Summit at Arcadia University. This event was sponsored by the Tavis Smiley Foundation and was entitled "Too Important To Fail". The goal of the progam was to offer parents information about the ways they can support their childrens educational development. Eight workshops addressed the following topics:
  • Parenting Matters-focused on parent advocacy and engagement. The facilitators discussed the benefits of parnts being actively involved at their children's schools.
  • Summer Brain Drain-provided strategies to encourage learning throughout the summer.
  • Healthy Kids Equal Smart Kids-shared information about healthy food choices which would help children stay focused and energized during the school day.
  • The ABCs of College-focused on developing an academic and financial plan to prepare students to attend college.
  • Third Grade Learning-focused on the importance of literacy and vocabulary development among elementary students.
  • Father Figures and Mentors-provided information about the importance of male role models in the lives of young boys.
  • Teachers Counts-emphasized the need to develop partnerships with a child's teacher in order to understand what is occurring in the classroom and reinforcing learning at home
  • What If Microsoft Were Hiring-offered skills to enhance children's proficiency in math and science.
This event was well attended by parents, teachers and community organizations which are working to improve the academic achievement of children, particularly African American Males.

This program was a pre event for the Black Male Development Symposium which will be held at Arcadia University on May 12, 2012.
