| | | | Dear Scouter, | What a fantastic Council Camporee! Our "Back to the Falls" Camporee took place over the weekend of June 22-24 at Resica Falls Scout Reservation, and if you missed it you missed a really excellent event. The weather was perfect and the program outstanding with over 50 activity areas from which to choose. Kudos to Chuck Bolger, Council Camporee Committee Chairman, the 50+ volunteers that served on the committee, and the countless volunteers that manned the activity areas or helped out behind-the-scenes to make the weekend such a success. Everywhere you looked you saw volunteers in their distinctive, bright-orange volunteer shirts (the "pumpkin" shirts!) diligently working to make sure the more than 800 participants had a great time. On Saturday evening we dedicated the new Richards Arena, named after Eagle Scout Thomas J. Richards who passed away two years ago at the age of 19. Tom was the consummate showman, and what better tribute to his memory than to create an arena to entertain and inspire the thousands and thousands of youth who will be passing through Resica Falls in the years to come. The Richards family was in attendance, and the program was very moving. The Arena itself was amazing, and it will play host to the opening and closing ceremonies of the Resica Falls Summer Camp Olympics to be held each week this summer as part of our Council's Boy Scout summer camp program. Have a safe and happy 4th of July!

One of the surprise highlights of the evening was an impromptu A cappella group made up of camp staff members who thoroughly entertained the audience with their renditions of classic Doo-Wop songs from the 50's and 60's. |
Help Wanted: Openings for Quality Unit Executives | The Cradle of Liberty Council is seeking service-minded, personable individuals with a commitment to the ideals of the BSA who are interested in having a positive impact on the lives of local elementary school-aged boys. The Quality Unit Executive position is a full-time, paid position with benefits and involves assisting local Cub Scout packs with unit leader selection, leader training, membership recruitment and retention, unit program planning including fundraising and advancement, and camp promotion. This service role as a coach, counselor, mentor, and teacher requires a college degree, personal transportation to get to and from meetings on your own, and working evenings and some weekends. Training and mileage reimbursement is provided. If you are interested in joining the Cradle of Liberty field staff as a QUE, please send your resume along with a cover letter explaining why you are interested in becoming a QUE to: QUE Position Cradle of Liberty Council, BSA 1485 Valley Forge Road Wayne, PA 19087 |
Pardon Our Mess! | Over the next several weeks we will be cleaning offices and moving cubicles in the main office area of the Firestone Scouting Resource Center in Wayne. The end result will be a safer, cleaner, and more efficient work space for our staff enabling them to deliver even better service to our Scouts and Scouters than before! While this will NOT affect the Valley Forge Scout Shop or volunteer access to the Reception Desk and conference rooms, there will be limited access to the office area in the rear of the building. These efforts may also intermittently interrupt our Internet and phone service, and some staff members may be working out of other locations. If you plan to visit a council staff member at the Valley Forge Office in the coming weeks, please be sure to contact that person in advance to ascertain where and when it is possible to meet. Thank you for your understanding. |
Cradle of Liberty Scouts on the Trails of Philmont
| The 2012 Cradle of Liberty Philmont Contingent braved the wild fires of Colorado Springs as it hit the trailhead in Cimarron on June 26th. The contingent consisting of 136 Scouts and leaders spread between 12 crews was safely evacuated from the Garden of the Gods visitor center as the Waldo Canyon Fire crested the ridge shortly after arriving in Colorado Springs. From there, the crews toured the Olympic Training Center, Royal Gorge and rafted down the Arkansas River before heading down to basecamp. A special thanks go out to John Schultz, Les McIntosh and Mike Bernard from the High Adventure Committee for serving as contingent leaders for the group and making sure everything ran smoothly for the participants. For more information about high adventure or the 2013 Philmont Contingent please contact the committee at HAC@COLBSA.org. |

The August NYLT course is full with 60 on the roster, and 7 on the waiting list. The two weekend course in Sept/Oct is nearing capacity. The dates of the weekends are September 28-30 and October 5-7, and the cost is only $250 payable with your application. Health & Safety Tip of the Week - Swimming at Commercial or Public Pools | A common question received is, "Do we have to have a trained adult leader if we are at a commercial or public pool or when using an outfitter?" The answer is yes. A current Safe Swim Defense and/or Safety Afloat commitment or training card (less than two years) is required even when a unit is swimming at a public pool or when using a guide service. Source: BSA Summer Aquatics Safety Alert. | COL Eagle Scout Alumni Association - Now Meeting Every Month | The COL Eagle Alumni Association has begun meeting on the 4th Monday of each month at the Marks Scouting Resource Center.
