Spring Fling and Egg Hunt this Sunday!

Be sure to join me this Sunday for my annual Spring Fling and Egg Hunt from 2-4 p.m. at the Horticulture Center in Fairmount Park!

This will be a great opportunity to start thinking about spring and being outdoors.

Fun for the whole family: the Philadelphia Zoo will bring some animals, we will have some arts and crafts, and we will also have a silly hat parade!

We will also have displays on healthy eating and exercise.

The event will be highlighted by an egg hunt for children 3-12 years old.

Come join the Department of Homeland Security, Philadelphia Mounted police and others.

RSVP by calling my office at (215) 879-6615.

Should you have any questions or comments on this or any state-related issue, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Boy Scout Troop 133: Interim Calendar 2013

Hello Scout Parents and Friends,

In an effort to facilitate weekend planning and scheduling, we have put together a Troop calendar, listing as many upcoming events as are known at this time.  The calendar runs from the current month through September 2013 and will eventually be enhanced with information through year-end.  For now, we hope that this will help you to prepare for all the upcoming Scout activities.  Your input, recommendations, and suggestions are welcome (please attend the next all-parent meeting in April; we'll have an agenda and maximum meeting time of one hour).

Please note:

·        Swimming at St. Joe's is NOT on the calendar for now; we are waiting for a response from the aquatics director regarding available dates and will provide updates as soon as possible

·        We need volunteers to plan the menu and provide food and beverages for our closing ceremony in June

·        Don't forget about the Friends of Scouting contributions ($25 per Scout)

·        See calendar below – it is also attached in an Excel spreadsheet

Thanks to all who attended the Bowling party – and to everyone who has continued to extend your time, your vehicles, and your finances to enhance our children's Scouting experience.

Good Morning District Chairmen,

I'm wondering if you would be willing to help us form a group of district and unit level volunteers who could attend an upcoming half-day dialogue to gauge our council's reaction to possible new membership policies.

The retreat is scheduled to be held as follows:
            Date:               Saturday, March 23, 2013
            Time:               8:00am to 12:00pm
Location:         Roger S. Firestone Scouting Resource Center
                                    1485 Valley Forge Road
                                    Wayne, PA  19087

Our objective is to create a group with diverse perspectives and backgrounds.  To that end, we ask that you utilize the attached Participant Nomination Form when speaking with potential nominees.  The more diverse the nominees are, the better.  The information collected will be treated confidentially, and shared ONLY with the facilitators of the dialogue session and solely for the purpose of composing a diverse group.

We ask that each District provide at least five nominees.  We will be limiting our group to no more than three persons per district in order to facilitate interactive dialogue, so not everyone nominated will necessarily be selected.  Nominations must be received by Monday, March 18, so that the facilitators have enough time to review nominees.

Nomination forms can be submitted to Torpey White via email, twhite@elkocpa.com.  We realize this doesn't give you much time, but we're very excited about the opportunity to speak with this group.

Please keep in mind that our aim is not to have you engage in a long-winded conversation with each person about BSA Membership Standards.  Rather, it is just to gauge, informally, where people might be coming from.  All nominees will be contacted prior to the event, and those who are not selected for the dialogue session will still have the opportunity to share their views separately.

Lastly, the options listed at the bottom of the nomination form are not anything but our attempt to capture a range of opinions, as we do not know what the potential resolution on the ballot in May will be.

Thanks in advance for your help and if you have any questions or would like to discuss any particulars please feel free to reach me on my cell phone (shown below).

Update from Tufts University
Tufts Logo

Note from the research team at Tufts University:

We would like to offer our sincere thanks to the Cradle of Liberty Council for their continued support, and to all the families and Scout leaders who have made this study possible. We have been welcomed into your Den and Pack meetings, District-wide Roundtables, and other Council-wide celebrations of Scouting! With funding from the John Templeton Foundation and the support of staff and volunteers in the Cradle of Liberty Council, we are continuing our exciting study of the impact of Scouting on the academic and personal development of Cub Scouts.

The Tufts Team, with the invaluable assistance of Pack leaders, has gathered pertinent information from Scouts, parents, and leaders throughout the Cradle of Liberty Council. We have completed our first round of data collection in January, and have already begun preparing for Wave 2. Through interviews, short-answer surveys, and focus groups discussions, leaders have shared their views about the role of Scouting in the development of character, as well as of the overall impact of Scouting on youth. We have also received thoughtful feedback on how to improve our data collection process. This information will be incredibly helpful as we plan for future waves of this study.

For those who participated in Wave 1, we will be contacting you in the near future about the upcoming second wave of data collection with Scouts, which will begin in May 2013. We are committed to meeting the unique needs of each unit so that participating in the study is as easy as possible.

For information about the study, visit www.tuftscampstudy.com , If you are interested in getting your Pack involved in the next wave of the study, please send us an email attuftsbsa@gmail.com.

From all of us at the Tufts Team, thank you so much for your support! We look forward to seeing many of you at Scouting events in the near future!

Health & Safety Tip of the Week:

In-Home Safety Warning - Single-load Liquid Laundry Packets

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is advising parents and caregivers to lock up single-load liquid laundry packets and keep them away from children.  Liquid laundry packets are attractive to children because they are soft and colorful and resemble familiar items like candy and teething products.  These items also dissolve quickly when placed in the mouth or are handled with wet hands. Children who are exposed to the chemicals are at risk of serious injury because they can be toxic.  In 2012, CPSC staff have learned of about 500 incidents involving children and adults who were injured by the packets.  Learn more about the dangers of single-load laundry packets at http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/pubs/390.pdf  Source: USA.gov.
